Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) offers remarkable opportunities for organizations in improving productivity, innovation, and efficiency. However, the rapid development and massive adoption of GenAI also raise serious concerns about its environmental sustainability. The training and operation of GenAI models consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, contributing significantly to global carbon emissions. This article presents a comprehensive perspective on how organizations should address the environmental challenges posed by GenAI. It highlights the urgency for integrating digital sustainability, ethical AI governance, and environmental responsibility into corporate strategies. The paper also discusses regulatory gaps, psychological barriers to climate action, and the growing need for Scope 3 emission reporting. Ultimately, this study emphasizes the need for an inclusive and adaptive governance framework to ensure that GenAI becomes a solution, not a threat, to the climate crisis.
